VIDEO: Arson investigation underway after Portland City Councilor’s car, home damaged in fire

Authorities are investigating a possible arson after a fire damaged the car, carport and home of Portland City Councilor Candace Avalos overnight Sunday. Portland Fire & Rescue officials said they responded to reports of the fire in the Mill Park neighborhood at around 2:40 a.m., finding several vehicles and a carport on fire.

The fire was successfully put out and no injuries were reported, authorities said. PFR noted there is now an open and active investigation into the cause of the fire. However, Portland police, who assisted fire officials at the scene, said the vehicle of origin belonged to Avalos and the cause is โ€œconsidered suspicious in nature.โ€

No arrests have been made at this time. In a statement, Councilor Avalos recalled waking up to her car, carport and home โ€œengulfed in flames.โ€ โ€œIโ€™m grateful for the quick response from Portland firefighters who prevented the fire from spreading even further,โ€ she said.
