PHOTOS: On Sunday, Aug. 10, Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Search & Rescue (SAR) volunteers responded to a call from two hikers in the Badlands Wilderness Area, east of Bend. The hikers, who had set out on the Flatiron Rock Trail earlier that day, reported they had run out of food and water, were lost, and one was experiencing a medical issue. They were approximately four miles from the trailhead when they called for help. Deputy Josh Westfall was the first to reach the hikers around 4:30 p.m., providing them with food and water. He was soon joined by 12 SAR volunteers who brought additional supplies. The hikers were assisted back to the trailhead, but they declined further medical treatment and left the area on their own.
