Portland General Electric now allowing public access to wildfire camera network

VIDEO: The public can now access Portland General Electricโ€™s wildfire camera network that is used to spot potential wildfires early for firefighting and safety response. PGE says the camera network allows emergency management and firefighting agencies to monitor potential wildfire risks, make timely safety decisions, and collaborate on fire prevention efforts. The public will now be able to view and interact with the cameras across PGEโ€™s service area, which goes as far south as Latgawa Mountain in Jackson County and as far north as Bald Hill near Scappoose.

โ€œOpening public access to the real-time feeds for everyone is one of the ways we can help people plan for and make important decisions during potential emergency situations,โ€ said Ben Felton, PGE executive vice president and chief operating officer. โ€œPGE plans and prepares year-round to prevent wildfires, and this camera network is an important tool in our toolkit.โ€ The public utility company says it began installing the cameras in 2021 to help keep communities safe through smoke and fire detection. When a camera detects smoke or fire activity, agencies receive notifications with the incidentโ€™s location and direct links to live camera feeds and functionality.
