Man dies after SUV plunges into Burnt River in Baker County

VIDEO: A Baker City man was found dead Monday after his SUV crashed into the Burnt River near Huntington over the weekend, according to the Baker County Sheriff’s Office. He was identified as Daniel Earl Marshall, 55, of Baker City.

The incident began Sunday morning when dispatch received a report of a submerged vehicle in the Burnt River around 9:54 a.m. Deputies and Huntington Fire personnel responded to the scene, where they found a small SUV partially visible from the road. The office said initial ground searches by Baker County Search and Rescue found no victims along the riverbanks. Due to high water levels and strong currents, the responders postponed recovery efforts until Monday, April 21.

The Baker County Search and Rescue Ropes Team established a “technical high-angle rope system” spanning from the railroad bridge to Barber Road. A team member was secured to the line, transported along the rope system, and lowered onto the SUV’s roof to attach a tow line. Halfway Towing and Repair then recovered the SUV, where Marshall’s body was discovered inside.
