Tulsa Fire Department respond to hangar fire at Riverside Airport

The Tulsa Fire Department responded to a hangar fire at the Riverside Airport on Wednesday evening.

According to the airport, one hangar belonging to a private owner caught fire around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

“The fire was mainly in the office area of the hangar,” explained Kayle Greiman, a Captain with TFD. “To the north, there were airplanes, but they were separated by a steel wall. The wall did a pretty good job of keeping fire off the planes. There was a little bit of heat damage to one of the planes that was located in that hangar to the north, but basically just office furniture was what was on fire, in addition to the building itself that was on the south end.”

Greiman said firefighters pushed the heat damaged plane out of the hangar to protect it from further damage as they were fighting the fire.

TFD reported no one was injured in the fire and said the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Greiman said the department was relieved the situation was able to be resolved quickly and safely.

“When it was reported, any time you have multiple callers that means something is generally significant, that a lot of people are seeing it. We had reports that multiple hangars were involved and that there was jet fuel involved. We were prepared for potentially defensive operations initially and that’s something my crew was talking about when we were rolling in is ‘hey, if we need to stay defensive, let’s take a look at the structure,’ but as it turned out, we were very fortunate that the fire was contained pretty much to those office units. We got a quick stop on it and we all got to go home safely.”

The Riverside Airport remains open and operational.
