Durant firefighters help make unexpected delivery

When dealing with emergencies, the Durant Fire Department is accustomed to saving lives and bringing fire blankets. But this emergency had them help deliver life with baby blankets.

Durant firefighters told KTEN they responded to a call at the Westside Travel Plaza after a young woman who didn’t know she was pregnant had already given birth. Her grandmother stepped in first, delivering the baby before crews arrived.

“The mother done great; the baby was already there, the grandma assisted with delivering it,” said Durant Fire Department driver Kannon Jackson. “It was a textbook delivery; we just assisted with care.” Firefighters provided oxygen, and precautionary care to the newborn, ensuring both the mother and baby were stable until Bryan County Emergency Management Services took over.
