Two Perrysburg police officers are being praised for their quick actions after they arrived at an apartment fire earlier this month and managed to knock down the flames before firefighters reached the scene. The fire broke out around 10 p.m. on Nov. 6 inside a unit at the Perryโs Crossing Apartments. According to a report from the Perrysburg Police Department, the fire began in the kitchen and was sparked by an air fryer.
Colleen Grogan, who lives next door to the affected apartment, said she and her family were unaware anything was wrong until officers began pounding on their door.
“We kind of disregarded it and next thing you know, the police were banging on the door saying you have to get out. Thereโs a fire upstairs,” Grogan said. “Itโs definitely an instant panic.”
Body camera footage released by the department shows Officer John Growden grabbing a fire extinguisher from his patrol car. Officer Stephen Loar can be heard shouting at neighbors to evacuate as smoke pours from the upstairs unit. Growden said the moment unfolded quickly.
