Large fire at Rumpke landfill now fully contained, Colerain Fire Department says

VIDEO: Firefighters say that a large fire at the Rumpke landfill in Colerain Township has now been contained. On Sunday evening, WLWT’s cameras captured a very large plume of black smoke rising above the landfill. According to Rumpke, crews began combatting the fire at approximately 6:30 p.m., where it was eventually fully contained by 8:09 p.m.

The Colerain Township Fire Department says that the EPA will now monitor the area for hazardous air conditions and issue alerts as needed. However, no alerts have been issued at this time. Rumpke’s communications manager, Molly Yeager, said that no one is believed to have been injured in the incident, and that all of Rumpke’s employees remain accounted for. Yeager also said that the investigation into the cause of the fire remains ongoing, but that it’s possible that the fire may have been sparked by something that was already present inside of the landfill.
