VIDEO/PHOTOS: A Columbus Fire lieutenant suffered minor injuries while saving a dog from a fire. The Columbus Division of Fire posted video of the incident on Thursday, saying Lieutenant Birt was coming from a department physical on October 28 around 2 p.m. and was first on the scene of a fire on West Markinson Avenue.
Lacking his usual equipment, video showed the lieutenant picking up a concrete block and using it to free a dog from the porch of the burning building. He then grabs the dog and runs away from the intensifying blaze.
CFD said that while he suffered minor injuries from the fire, the dog is safe and sound. “This is a testament to all our members who put themselves in harm’s way for our community and furry friends. You are a hero, Lieutenant Birt!” CFD said.
