Three firefighters were presented Medal of Heroism certificates for saving the life of a pilot who crashed into the ocean near the Oak Island pier on August 2. During a press conference on Monday, pilot Mark Finelkstein thanked Southport firefighters Chad Butchello, Austin Lancaster, and Chris Dunham, who responded to the crash after the plane struck the water due to engine failure.
โIโm certain that Mr. Finkelstein would not be with us today had it not been for the quick actions and response of the Oak Island Fire Department and Southport working together with the mutual aid agreement, because seconds matter in an urgent situation,โ said Chief Charles A. Drew.
