The FDNY celebrates 160 years of bravery, service and dedication to New York City

VIDEO: On July 31, 2025, the FDNY proudly celebrated its 160th birthday. As the largest fire department in the United States and one of the most respected emergency response agencies in the world, the FDNY continues to set the standard for fire protection, emergency medical service and public safety. Since its founding in 1865, the FDNY has remained steadfast in its mission to protect life and property across New York City’s five boroughs. Each year, the Department responds to millions of emergency callsโ€”ranging from fires and medical emergencies to large-scale disastersโ€”making it the busiest fire department in the world. “With every call, FDNY members show what it means to serve with honor and courage,” FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker said. “Over the decades, the Department has changedโ€”and we continue to evolve as an all-hazards public safety agency.”
