Off-Trail Fall Sparks Intense Rescue On Steep Hudson Valley Trail

The incident happened around 7:34 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6, when Beacon Fire and EMS crews were dispatched to the Mount Beacon Incline Trail for a report of a 45-year-old man with an ankle injury, the Beacon Fire Department said on Wednesday, May 7.ย

The injured hiker was able to call for help and said he was about a quarter mile up the stairs on the trail. Firefighters and Beacon Police officers climbed the mountain to find him.

Because of fading daylight and the likelihood of a long operation, officials activated a โ€œ10-35โ€ extended rescue response, calling in backup units. The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office responded with a drone team to assist in locating the hiker, while Castle Point firefighters were dispatched to cover other calls in the city.

Crews reached the hiker at 8:24 p.m., about a quarter mile from the Casino landing and 300 yards off the marked trail. He was conscious and alert, with minor injuries, firefighters said.

First responders helped him hike further uphill toward the Casino overlook, where he was met by the Beacon Volunteer Ambulance Corps using an off-road utility vehicle. The hiker was then brought down the access road, treated at the scene, and taken to a nearby hospital.
