New tech helps East Aurora dispatchers locate 911 callers faster

VIDEO: New technology from Erie County Central Police Services is helping East Aurora police dispatchers find people in emergencies faster and with pinpoint accuracy.

The system, called Rapid SOS, uses cell towers and other digital tracking tools to locate 911 callers more precisely than ever before. It can even allow dispatchers to connect with callers via live video, similar to FaceTime, so they can see the situation in real time.

โ€œItโ€™s the stuff that helps you sleep better at night,โ€ Chief Patrick Welch of the East Aurora Police Department told 2 On Your Side. โ€œAs technology evolves, weโ€™re able to help people faster than ever before.โ€

The East Aurora dispatch center fields about 130 calls a day โ€” and thousands of 911 calls each year. In addition to serving the East Aurora Police Department, dispatchers also coordinate responses for 11 volunteer fire companies.
