Elderly woman dies in Montgomery County house fire; investigation underway

A devastating house fire on Sunday claimed the life of 85-year-old Delores K. Phelps in the Town of Florida, Amsterdam. EMS arrived on scene at 155 Abraham Road at 2:50 p.m. Sunday to find the structure fully engulfed in flames.

Fire Chief Les Bramer directed mutual aid from several local fire departments and Montgomery County EMS. Despite their efforts, the intensity of the blaze prevented rescuers from entering the residence to save Phelps, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Phelps was reportedly discovered deceased at the scene. Her body was transported to Albany Medical Center for an autopsy, but Authorities have found no immediate indications of foul play. The Montgomery County District Attorneyโ€™s Office Fire Investigator, Montgomery County Fire Investigation Team, and the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control are investigating the cause of the fire, which remains undetermined.
