1-year-old child dies after Chenango house fire

On August 25 at approximately 12:47 p.m., New York State Police and Broome County Sheriffโ€™s Department responded to a house fire at a home in Chenango.

Upon arrival, law enforcement found that a 26-year-old woman was able to get her children, ages five and two, out of the home, but was unable to get a one-year-old out due to heavy smoke conditions.

Troopers and sheriffโ€™s deputies were able to get into the home through a window and get the one-year-old out of the home.

The child was transported to Upstate Medical Center, but did not survive.

Troopers are working with Broome County Fire Investigators to determine the cause of the fire.
