On Oct. 25, Hobbs will showcase more than just hoops, but a gathering of service, mentorship and community pride. The day kicks off with the United Way First Responders Basketball Tournament at 9 a.m., then shifts gears at 12:30 p.m. as NMSU student-athletes host a free youth clinic for local children in Tasker Arena.
The festivities bring together first responders, families and young athletes for a cause that extends well beyond the hardwood. Organized in partnership with United Way of Lea County, Chevron, and the Boys and Girls Clubs, the tournament and clinic blend charity, community spirit, and mentorship in a uniquely New Mexican way.
The morning’s First Responders Basketball Tournament will feature teams from local law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency services, playing not only for bragging rights but to raise funds supporting local United Way programs. “It’s a chance for the people who serve our community every day to come together, compete, and give back in a different way,” said Becca Titus, event coordinator. “And having Division I athletes from New Mexico State here in Hobbs makes it even more special—it shows our kids that big opportunities can start right here at home.”
