Investigation underway into cause of scrapyard fire in Bayonne

VIDEO: Fire marshals in New Jersey are trying to determine what started a fire at a scrapyard in Hudson County over the weekend.

The fire broke out around 6:20 p.m. on Saturday at the EMR Recycling facility on East 2nd Street in Bayonne.

According to Bayonne Fire Chief Keith Weaver, arriving companies found heavy fire in a scrap metal pile. Firefighters quickly arrived on scene and used multiple ladder pipes as well as fire boats to battle the flames.

The fire was put under control around 11:40 p.m., and no injuries were reported.

“I want to thank all our firefighters and mutual aid partners for assisting us as we battled this stubborn fire,” Chief Weaver said.

Due to smoke from the fire overspreading to the lower part of the city, the Hudson Regional Health Commission also responded to the scene to set up air monitoring. Officials found no abnormalities or particulates in the smoke.
