Truckee Meadows firefighters hold educational burning doll house demonstration for high school students

VIDEO: “I want to be a firefighter,” said Academy of Arts, Careers and Technology sophomore Jaxson Grenert. Grenert has aspirations to, one day, help tame blazes across the Sierra. But first, heโ€™s got to the learn the basics. Like how to put get your gear on in under sixty seconds, and the ins and outs of fire dynamics and smoke flow. Luckily for Grenert, he got a first-hand look on how it all works, thanks to Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue. TMFR firefighters came by the academy Monday morning to run an interactive demonstration, slowly, burning down a doll house.

Itโ€™s an annual showcase put on for students in ACCT’s fire science course, led by Doug Donovan. He recently retired after 27 years with the Henderson Fire Department, and this semester, Donovan started putting his experience to use, this time, in the world of education. The fire science teacher was happy to help coordinate an invaluable experience for his students who helped douse the flames once it all wrapped up. โ€œIt gets them out of the classroom and into an environment where they can see how fire and smoke flow really affects the structure, versus looking at power point slides in the classroom,” said Donovan.
