Lightning strike sparks fire in northwest Omaha trailer home

VIDEO: The Omaha Fire Department responded to a fire in a trailer home as storms moved through the metro late Sunday. Shortly after 9:30 p.m. Sunday, crews received reports of lightning striking a home near 129th St. and West Maple Rd., in the northwest Omaha area.

When crews arrived, they initially found and extinguished a small furnace fire. Smoke was then found coming from the attic of the residence, and a working fire was declared. Firefighters fought the fire for about fifteen minutes before it was under control. The homeowner took three dogs out of the house, and crews rescued two dogs.

According to a report from OFD, the woman said she heard a loud noise, followed by her kitchen light โ€œexploding.โ€ She then saw a glow coming from her furnace room. An initial investigation found that charring was found in wiring in the furnace, as well as in the kitchen on an outlet and light.

Investigators found the cause of the fire was due to a lightning strike. The origin of the fire โ€œappeared to be several locations with electrical wire/appliances throughout,โ€ OFD reports. There were no injuries in the incident.
