Volunteer fire department in Connecticut celebrates 100 years of answering the call

The Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Department in Newtown is celebrating 100 years of service. Established in 1925, the all-volunteer fire department recently marked its centennial anniversary. To recognize the department for its tradition of excellence, several state representatives from Newtown arrived at the headquarters on Hawleyville Road this week. State Rep. Martin Foncello (R-107) and State Rep. Mitch Bolinsky (R-106) joined the departmentโ€™s command and staff members for their monthly August meeting.

There, they presented department leaders with a citation. โ€œWe wanted to recognize the past and present members of the department, whose professionalism, dedication and selfless service have protected the health and safety of the residents of Newtown and surrounding communities for a century,โ€ Foncello said. He added that when people experience their worst moment, whether it be a fire, a car accident or other type of emergency, members of the fire department โ€œshow up for them and do what they can to make things a bit better.โ€

Bolinksy proudly described what the all-volunteer department represents. โ€œFor 100 years, the Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Department has stood as a symbol of courage, service and community spirit,โ€ he said. โ€œTheir century of dedication is a testament to what it means to serve others selflessly, and we honor every volunteer โ€“ past and present โ€“ who answered the call.โ€ The Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Company was organized by community members in May 1925 and first consisted of 26 members.
