A dozen apartment units were damaged after a large fire broke out in south Charlotte early Thursday morning. The Nov. 20 blaze was sparked just before 3 a.m., along Sycamore Creek Drive at the River Crossing apartments. Battalion Chief John Lipcsak of the Charlotte Fire Department said extra resources had to be called in twice, and at one point, 75 firefighters were helping to fight the flames.
Video shared by firefighters showed tall flames coming from the roof of the apartment building. During the firefight, the battalion chief said crews had to come outside the apartments for just a short time.
Lipcsak said it took just under one hour to control the fire, and that crews would stay at the complex throughout the morning to put out any potential hotspots. He also said nobody was hurt and that the American Red Cross was helping residents affected by the fire. One thing Lipcsak said people could do to prevent fires is to make sure they have functioning alarms.
