Video shows ocean rescue of person spotted from ferry off Massachusetts

A person was rescued from the ocean off Massachusetts during a nor’easter on Monday after they were spotted in the water from a Steamship Authority ferry, authorities said. Video shared by Falmouth Fire/Rescue showed the person being hoisted from the churning sea into a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter.

The Coast Guard said it was alerted about 3:19 p.m. by the Steamship Authority to a person seen in the water while a ship was headed to Woods Hole. People searching by air and sea found the person and brought them to Air Station Cape Cod. The ferry reported seeing the person in the water near Juniper Point, and that crew had thrown life rings into the ocean, Falmouth Fire/Rescue said. As search-and-rescue teams looked for the person, a helicopter crew spotted the person off Nobska Point about 4:25 p.m. and pulled to safety.

The person was taken from Joint Base Cape Cod to Falmouth Hospital. They were expected to survive, fire/rescue officials said. They didn’t have information about how the person went into the water, which Falmouth police were investigating.
