VIDEO: New York crews battle massive fire, building collapse

A large fire broke out in downtown Gloversville Tuesday evening, calling several crews to the scene. The fire took place at an old factory on South Main Street.

The building became engulfed in flames around 7 p.m. Thick smoke filled the air, and video footage shows the building collapsing as the flames continued to burn. According to Gloversville Fire Department Chief Thomas Groff, the fire spread to four separate buildings. Groff said the fire was mainly in the factory building, but two buildings to the south suffered both minor and severe damages.

Adirondack Exotics, a pet store next to the factory, shared the fire spread to their business, damaging both the building and the things inside. Also, while not directly effected by the fire, the Fulton County Regional SPCA temporarily evacuated the dogs from the shelter. Officials said a car dealership was also located near the building. It is unclear how many cars may have been damaged.

According to Groff, the fire was brought under control around 10:20 p.m. However, embers were floating through the air and landing on nearby rooftops throughout the night. Embers sparked a fire in a nearby building, which will have to be torn down, officials said. A skeleton of the old factory is all that remains. Groff said weather conditions added to the challenge of fighting the fire. Gloversville Police and fire investigators will be on scene to investigate a cause.
