iPhone saves Florida man’s life after fence impales him during crash, fire crews say

VIDEO: A man’s iPhone saved his life after he crashed his truck through a fence, impaling him, the Marion County Fire Rescue said. MCFR was dispatched to a rollover crash at the 6400 block of West Highway 329 in Reddick. “The crash was initially reported through an iPhone alert, followed by direct communication between the injured driver and our public safety communications center,” MCFR said in a post on Facebook.

Crews arrived within six minutes and found a pickup truck overturned in a field after crashing through a fence, and the driver trapped inside. “He was pinned and impaled by fence posts, so he probably wouldn’t have been able to call 911 himself,” James Lucas with Marion County Fire Rescue said. According to MCFR, paramedics began treatment while crews from different stations began to perform a precision extrication. The driver of the vehicle was impaled by the fence, causing complications with the extrication. After using specialized tools, firefighters carefully removed the vehicle’s roof and successfully freed the driver by 6:30 a.m., MCFR said. The driver was transported to a nearby hospital.
