Custer Gallatin National Forest plans prescribed burns

The Custer Gallatin National Forest plans to begin prescribed burns as early as Oct. 21, depending on weather and safety conditions. Fire crews across the region will continue prescribed fire and suppression operations through December as conditions allow, helping reduce overgrown vegetation and protect nearby communities from wildfires.

Planned burns include several units in the North Bridgers near Bridger Bowl and a larger project near Diamond Butte Lookout in Powder River County. Officials say some areas may temporarily close for public safety, and residents should expect periods of smoke. Updates on prescribed burns will be posted on the Custer Gallatin National Forest Facebook page. Forest officials remind drivers to slow down and use headlights if they encounter smoke on the road.
