Warrenton Fire Protection District planning for new hires, new trucks

VIDEO: For the first time in over a decade, Warren County voters approved a tax proposal for the Warren County Fire Protection District. On April 8, voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition L and Proposition F. โ€œIโ€™d like to thank the community for supporting us,โ€ said Fire Chief Anthony Hayslip.

Proposition L, for Life Saving Equipment, is a $10 million bond issue for capital expenditures. The money will be used to add living quarters to Station One so it can be staffed 24/7 in the future. Bond issue funds will also be used to buy new fire trucks. The youngest truck in the fleet is 11 years old and the oldest truck is 41 years old.

โ€œAnd weโ€™ve had it happen a couple of times where weโ€™re responding to a call and the truck will break down,โ€ said Hayslip. Proposition F, for Fire Safety, is a 25-cent tax increase that will go to the general fund from property taxes. Funds from Prop F will help address a problem with understaffing. Only one fire station is staffed around the clock and it has one three-person crew to cover 124 square miles. If that crew is busy and another call comes in, surrounding fire departments are called in to respond to the call.
