Dog dies in Kansas City house fire

A house fire at a Kansas City home left one dog dead early Wednesday morning, according to the Kansas City Fire Department. Crews were called to the area of East 26th Street and Bales Avenue just before 5:45 a.m. on reports of a heavy fire coming through the roof at a two-story home. When crews arrived, they began extinguishing the fire using multiple handlines. They then searched the property. KCFD eventually cleared the home and learned the occupants had been able to self-evacuate.

The fire was placed under control by about 5:53 a.m., and the Red Cross was ordered for two adults. Animal control was also ordered to help care for multiple dogs. KCFD Fire Chiefs Hopkins later told FOX4 that eight dogs were inside the home at the time of the fire, and one did not survive. Additionally, a firefighter was bitten by one of the dogs while they were trying to gather them and bring them to safety. At this time, crews are on scene and working on salvage and overhaul operations. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
