Waveland Fire Station named after former Mayor Mike Smith

A good friend, loving husband, and great neighbor โ€“ those are just some of the titles those close to Mayor Mike Smith are remembering him by. Friends and family members took turns sharing stories and reliving memories during a fire station dedication that made the two-term mayor who he was.

โ€œHe put a good example for everyone,โ€ one man said at the podium. โ€œMike was my friend. He never lied to me, never,โ€ a woman added. Mayor Jay Trapani issued a proclamation for Smithโ€™s dedication to the quality of life for all residents. Smith made a life out of public service. For nearly 40 years, he took on many roles, and his family and friends say that in each of them, he made a lasting impact.

โ€œThat was like my dad to me. Heโ€™s never once raised his voice at me. Anybody that heโ€™s ever talked to โ€“ heโ€™s just the greatest man Iโ€™ve ever met in my life,” Bradley Hart, Smithโ€™s grandson said.

Smithโ€™s name is now on the cityโ€™s fire station on Coleman Avenue, spreading a reminder of his touch on the city.
