VIDEO: One person was sent to the hospital, and multiple residents were displaced, after a lithium-ion battery caught fire at a downtown St. Paul apartment complex on Sunday morning. According to the St. Paul Fire Department, responders were called to the apartment on 7th Place East just before 5:15 a.m. Firefighters were able to quickly put out the fire, which was contained to a single unit, according to officials.
One resident was rescued from a second-floor balcony and taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. SPFD said no other injuries have been reported.
Residents of the building were temporarily evacuated. Officials said Metro Transit buses were used to provide shelter and support.
St. Paul Fire Deputy Chief Jamie Smith said eight to ten apartments will be uninhabitable due to smoke and water damage.
