VIDEO/PHOTOS: Fire crews responded to a house fire in Grand Rapids. The multi-family home is located on Dawes Avenue SE, south of 28th Street SE. Nearly 20 firefighters and eight firetrucks were spotted at the scene. According to Captain David Marchinda with the Grand Rapids Fire Department, the initial call came in just before 5:30 p.m. “It was a report of a fire on the back porch. Crews got on scene, and between the wind and the structure, it developed quite quickly and spread to all the units,” said Marchinda Monday evening.
“There normally is a firewall. But with these new builds, it’s really lightweight construction, so it’s not uncommon for them to spread quite rapidly.” He said all residents made it out of the structure without injuries and fire crews were on scene within five minutes. “We had one firefighter that was slightly injured,” Marchinda said. “I do not believe there were any civilian injuries.”
