Pellston firefighters urge drivers to slow down near emergency scenes

PHOTOS: The Pellston Fire Department is urging drivers to slow down when passing emergency vehicles after a speeding incident near a vehicle fire on November 14. First responders were attending to a vehicle fire on U.S. 31 near Pellston Regional Airport when the southbound lane was closed, and a firefighter was directing traffic in the northbound lane.

Firefighter Michael White reported that some drivers were speeding past the scene at up to 60 miles per hour, and one firefighter was nearly hit while directing traffic.

โ€œIt’s for our safety, working that emergency scene and we all have families that we want to go home to and if people are speeding through our emergency scene, there’s a higher probability that one of us is going to get hit and, you know, we may not make it home to our families,” White said.

Although no one was injured, the Pellston Fire Department is reminding all drivers to slow down for the safety of everyone.
