VIDEO: A dune buggy burst into flames and exploded just outside Silver Lakeโs fire station late Saturday morning. Amy VanderWilk was driving by when she spotted the fire and rushed to help.
“I was just driving home, driving home, and then I saw the car on fire,” she said. VanderWilk says she drove to a nearby campground and asked for a fire extinguisher. “And so I pulled up to the next place I went was, there’s a campground, and so I asked them if they had a fire extinguisher, and they did, and they gave me one.” She brought it back to the scene, where others were also trying to stop the flames.
“And so then I turned around and went back and brought the fire extinguisher to the guys, and they started to try to put it out with a fire extinguisher and and it did not work at all,” she said. Despite multiple attempts, the fire intensified. “They just, they were pouring and they just got worse and worse. More and more flames,” she said.
Crews soon arrived and contained the fire. No serious injuries were reported. Fire officials say fuel and nitrous oxide inside the buggy likely contributed to the explosion. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.
