The Gratiot County sheriff confirms a house fire Monday led to the deaths of an adult and child, along with at least three other children being injured.
Sheriff Clark says fire crews were called out to the 4000 block of Royce Rd in Emerson Township, between Ithica and Alma, around 1:20 Monday morning. The initial caller claimed several people were still inside the home. When firefighters arrived, they were told three people were still inside. The firefighters and other responders worked together to rescue those three. In all, four children were transported to hospitals with injuries.
However, the sheriff says a 2-year-old girl who was among those rescued and flown to DeVos Childrenโs Hospital in Grand Rapids later died. A 33-year-old man also died from injuries he received in the fire, according to the sheriff. The investigation into the fire is ongoing.
The Gratiot County Sheriffโs Office was assisted by Alma P.D., Ithaca Fire Rescue, Alma Fire, St. Louis Fire and Rescue, Breckenridge Fire Rescue, MMR, and MSP Fire Investigation Unit.
