3 people treated for smoke inhalation as fire heavily damages home in Saugus

VIDEO: Three people were treated for smoke inhalation after a fire heavily damaged a home in Saugus on Thursday. The Saugus Fire Department said the fire broke out at a home on 16 Acadia Ave. Thursday afternoon. Firefighters said the home was difficult to access as it is located on a steep hill. Neighbors said it appeared the fire started outside in a gazebo, but quickly spread to the back of the home. Smoke was seen from as far away as Chelsea and Somerville. The homeowner was treated for smoke inhalation, as were two police officers, while a firefighter suffered a dog bite as he helped rescue the family pets, three dogs and a bird. Saugus Deputy Fire Chief Tom D’Eon said it was an easy fire to find, but hard to get to. “It’s a very steep grade right here,” D’Eon said. “It’s a tight neighborhood. We’re up on a hill. It’s very challenging to get the apparatus in. We were able to get the engine in here, but we had to utilize ground ladders instead of the aerial because we couldn’t get the aerial up there.”
