Silver Spring home catches fire after propane tank explodes

PHOTOS: A cat has died in a house fire Sunday after a propane tank exploded at a Silver Spring home, according to the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service. Firefighters say crews were dispatched at 4:34 p.m. to reports of a house fire in the 900 block of Helena Drive. There, firefighters determined that the grill propane tank had exploded on the back porch, sending flames throughout the porch, the roof, and the first and second floors of the home. Firefighters say an elderly woman and her dog safely escaped the flames, but a cat died in the fire. The woman declined to be transported to the hospital for evaluation, firefighters added. Roughly 85 firefighters were on scene to extinguish the fire.
