Large Chesapeake Beach fire causes $1.5 million in damages, leaves families displaced

Thick black smoke and heavy flames billowed over homes in Calvert County Monday morning.

Officials said fire and rescue crews battled a fire that affected multiple apartments.

Units responded to the 3900 block of Gordon Stinnett Avenue just after 6:35 a.m. for reports of a fire. Flames were visible in the courtyard of the apartment building and eventually spread into the attic, and reached through the roof.

The Calvert County Sheriffโ€™s Office shared a picture of the large fire with DC News Now, showing thick black smoke in the sky and flames ripping through an apartment building.

In an update Monday afternoon, the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) said that around two dozen people were displaced. The fire caused around $1.5 million in damage, destroying 14 apartments.

One occupant was taken to the hospital for treatment.
