Crews contain wildfire on Bucksport-Orrington town line

Crews battled a remote fire on the Bucksport-Orrington town line Wednesday afternoon. According to Bucksport Fire Department Captain Joe Wardwell, the fire was reported by folks on a nearby pond after they heard a loud bang and saw smoke in the distance. Wardwell says it took crews some time to find the fire, but once they did, they were able to contain it to a one-acre area.

The fire was quickly knocked down, thanks to assistance from multiple departments in surrounding towns. “Forestry brought a helicopter, which they dumped three loads on the worst part of it, off to the side, and were able to knock down a pretty good chunk of that, so- if it wasn’t for all the help, then, we’d be here a lot longer,” says Wardwell. Bucksport received assistance from Dedham, Orrington, Orland, Penobscot, and Castine fire departments and the Maine Forestry Service. Authorities believe the fire was started by an electrical issue with a high-power line in the area.
