Camper explosion in Stetson triggered by Tannerite, officials say

The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office says a camper explosion near a Stetson home was caused by Tannerite that had been placed inside of it. Authorities said shortly before 2:10 p.m. Monday, the Stetson Fire Department responded to a report of black smoke and an explosion at 301 Coboro Road. According to investigators, residents at the property had put Tannerite โ€” a binary explosive often used for target shooting โ€” inside an old camper that was located behind the house.

The Tannerite was detonated, which caused the camper to explode, officials said. The blast started a fire that threatened a nearby wooded area, but firefighters were able to extinguish the flames before they spread. Stetson firefighters were assisted by crews from the Levant, Carmel and Etna fire departments. The State Fire Marshal’s Office said no injuries were reported, and that members of the agency responded to the scene to investigate the cause of the explosion. Members of the Maine State Police and Maine Forest Rangers also responded to the scene. The incident remains under investigation.
