St. George firefighter jumps into action, helps save drowning toddler

A firefighter with the St. George Fire Department (SGFD) helped save the life of a toddler who lived not too far from his home. On April 18, 2025, St. George Fire Captain Aaron Kowal was working on his home when he was alerted by his wife about a drowning two blocks away from where they live.

His wife is St. George Fire Protection District Public Information Officer Meg Kling. She saw the call come across her phone. Captain Kowal said his wife initially saw the call because it was a 911 call and appeared on the departmentโ€™s emergency response app. That meant the fire department and EMS were on the way to the scene. He jumped into his truck on his day off and drove over to where the drowning took place. When he arrived, Kowal saw a family member in the front yard and then went to the backyard, where he saw more family and the toddler. The St. George firefighter said the toddler could not get an adequate breath in and was blue. Kowal said he repositioned the toddler and used maneuvers to clear his airway.
