River Ridge apartment damaged after fire, multiple residents displaced

More than 50 neighbors are now displaced from their homes due to an apartment fire on Richard Avenue.
“It makes me devastated because you know all of my memories and stuff is gone now,โ€ said Mary Griffin. Griffin said she’s heartbroken after seeing her life and prized possessions go up in flames. “I had pictures of my mom that passed in there, and now I won’t get that back,โ€ said Griffin.

A large cloud of smoke could be seen in the sky for miles across Jefferson Parish. Heavy smoke also filled the ground. “My boyfriend said when he went up the stairs, it was so black you couldn’t see any doors,โ€ Griffin said. Iyana Johnson said she lives nearby but the apartment was her childhood home and it’s difficult seeing the place she grew up destroyed. โ€œIt’s pretty sad because this was basically home for us for a long time. I never saw anything like this before. Iโ€™ve seen a few fires, but nothing like this,โ€ Johnson said. JPFD said residents are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
