Lake Charles Fire Department graduates first EMT class designed for firefighters

The Lake Charles Fire Department celebrated the graduation of its first EMT class built exclusively for firefighters, marking a milestone in the departmentโ€™s efforts to enhance emergency medical response.

The city partnered with the National EMS Academy and Acadian Ambulance to launch the course, giving fire crews advanced medical training they can use on every call.

For many graduates, the certification represented more than just a job requirement. โ€œThis is something I really thought about and I really wanted to do,โ€ said Joshua Morrow, an EMT graduate. โ€œI wanted to become an EMT just to help better serve the citizens of Lake Charles. Iโ€™ve always enjoyed medical. Even when I was at McNeese, I graduated in a medical field and I just wanted to go ahead and continue to serve as and continue to make that happen.โ€

Fire Chief Delton Carter said what made this class stand out was the firefightersโ€™ drive to complete the training while balancing shifts, training and emergency calls. โ€œIt was something that they wanted,โ€ Carter said. โ€œIt was something that we needed on the department, but uniquely it was something that these guys wanted and they wanted to get their license to be able to provide this service for the community.โ€
