New fire chief joins Pittsburg fire department

VIDEO: The Pittsburg Fire Department will introduceย Jack Spencerย as its incoming Fire Chief during a press conference Tuesday afternoon at Fire Station #1.

Spencer, who officially assumes the role on Jan. 5, 2026, brings more than 30 years of firefighting experience, most recently serving as Battalion Fire Chief for the District of Columbia Fire and EMS. In that role, he led Special Operations, including hazardous materials response, fireboat operations, and National Security Special Event responses, managing five stations and 60 personnel along with a fleet of specialized apparatus.

City Manager Daron Hall said, โ€œWe are fortunate to have Jack lead our fire department. He is a leader with extensive experience and knowledge of firefighting. He will be a great addition to our management team and leader for the department.โ€

A native of Kansas, Spencer grew up near Wichita and earned an associateโ€™s degree in fire science from a community college in Andover, followed by a bachelorโ€™s degree in criminology and criminal justice from the University of Maryland. His decision to become a firefighter was inspired by a family member, and he began gaining experience through the Wichita Explore Program and volunteer firefighting during college.

Spencerโ€™s career also includes international training in the United Kingdom, South America, and Israel. He said he looks forward to bringing his leadership and experience back to Kansas, helping guide the Pittsburg Fire Department into the future.
