Des Moines family reunites with first responders after surprise home birth

VIDEO: A Des Moines family reunited with the first responders who helped them deliver their baby girl at home after an unexpected early arrival. Parents Taylor and Adrianna were preparing to head to the hospital around 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 21, believing they had ample time for the delivery. That’s because when they had their first child, Adrianna was in labor for 37 hours.

“I’m going to the garage, like ‘I’m going to get the baby’s car seat ready, we got so much time,’ and then she’s just screaming,” Taylor said. “I get inside and she’s like, ‘When is the ambulance coming? I need them right now.’ So, I called dispatch back.”

Public safety dispatcher Lindsey Hedlund guided them through the home birth process until Des Moines firefighters arrived. With teamwork, the baby was delivered safely and in good health. Both mother and child were taken to the hospital as a formality. This week, the family met the first responders for the first time since the delivery, expressing their gratitude and feeling blessed for the support they received.
