Scottsburg breaks ground on long-planned fire station to support city’s growth

VIDEO: A project five decades in the making is finally underway in Scott County, Indiana. The City of Scottsburg broke ground on a new fire station. They’re aiming to expand emergency services to meet the needs of the cityโ€™s growing population.

The new station is being built on land purchased nearly 50 years ago by the former Scottsburg Volunteer Fire Department, which secured the property with future expansion in mind.

โ€œIt was purchased for the sole purpose of being able to build a fire station there for future growth,โ€ said Scottsburg Fire Chief James Richey. โ€œThe members of the fire department agreed to sign that property over to the city at no cost to make this possible.โ€

Scottsburg Fire & Rescue does own a second building on Railroad Street, but it’s an older building that only houses firetrucks. This new station being constructed will be able to house firefighters, trucks and equipment.

Initial site work has begun, with piles of dirt, concrete slabs and structural metal visible just north of Scottsburgโ€™s historic downtown. Renderings show a compact, modern facility designed for both function and comfort.
