Indianapolis FD: Candle ignited east side fire that sent woman to hospital

PHOTOS: An east side fire sent one woman to the hospital after she inhaled toxic smoke.

According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, firefighters arrived at Braeburn Village Apartments โ€” located near E. 21st Street and Franklin Way โ€” just after midnight on Monday and spotted smoke coming from a third-story apartment.

Firefighters made their way into the apartment and found heavy smoke waiting inside, along with a fire burning in the back corner of the room. A 50-year-old woman was rescued from the apartment and transported to a hospital in serious condition.

According to IFD, the fire originated from an unattended candle placed in a pan, which was sitting on a chair. Investigators believe the woman was awoken by a smoke alarm and that she moved the pan off the chair before succumbing to toxic smoke.

The candle, which was still lit, then set nearby combustible items on fire. The fire was marked as under control within 12 minutes of fire crews arriving on scene.
