Highlander Fire Department firefighters get new gear thanks to $146K grant

VIDEO: Some firefighters in southern Indiana have new gear to wear to protect them from fires. Thanks to a $146,000 from the assistance to firefighters grant, the Highlander Fire Department was able to buy the new gear.

The department received 44 new sets and each includes a structural helmet, jacket, pants, boots and gloves. Ryan Houchen with Highlander told WHAS each set lasts about 10 to 15 years and the previous gear was reaching the end of its life.

“We will immediately put this gear into service as soon as they try their gear on, make sure it fits, there is no mistakes in the spelling of their names,” Houchen said. “Sometimes when you grow rapidly rapidly trying to catch up is very difficult.”

This new gear was very much needed, Highlander previously said its old gear was around for almost two decades.
