Firefighters battle massive fire at Gary pallet company

VIDEO/PHOTOS: Firefighters spent a majority of Sunday battling a massive fire at a pallet company in Gary, Indiana, authorities said. As of 8:40 p.m., more than 18 hours after the fire was first reported, firefighters were still working on the scene at Collins Pallet Recycling, 1584 Blaine St.

Gary firefighters initially responded to the business for the report of a large commercial building fire at approximately 2:32 a.m., the Gary Fire Department said in a news release. A short time later crews arrived at the scene and encountered heavy smoke and intense flames pouring out of the roof. “Large stacks of wooden pallets were stored both inside and outside the building, creating an extremely high fuel load and causing the fire to spread rapidly,” the department explained in the news release, in part.
