Woman, 80, in Critical Condition After Chicago Apartment Fire Rescue

VIDEO: A fire broke out in a three-flat apartment building in Roseland Wednesday morning, prompting neighbors to attempt the rescue of a senior woman trapped inside. In the area of 107th & South Calumet Ave., fire crews responded to a blaze that left an 80-year-old woman trapped on the second floor.

The building landlord told WGN-TV that the fire started on the first floor of the three-flat, sometime after 8:30 a.m., quickly spreading through the rest of the apartment building. โ€œThe lady was out the window, signaling out the window that she needed help, but couldnโ€™t get out,โ€ neighbor Sheryl Elliot said.

Many took action to save the woman, but faced challenges. โ€œIt was too smoky, but there wasnโ€™t much I could do but break the door down,โ€ Elliot added. First responders successfully rescued and later transported the woman to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
