Fire Chief Edward Canny announced his retirement, effective May 16, 2025, concluding nearly 28 years of service with the Springfield Fire Department. “My time with the department is something I will always treasure. Being able to serve the citizens of Springfield has always been my passion,” Canny said. “I am stepping away now to focus more on my family. There are some private family health matters that need more of my attention at this point in my life. I am fortunate that I can choose to retire at this time and ensure neither my family nor my responsibilities as Chief would be affected.” Canny expressed gratitude to Mayor Misty Buscher for her trust over the past two years, during which he led the department. Under his leadership, the department improved emergency response capabilities, firefighter training, and public safety initiatives. He also played a key role in organizing and opening several new fire stations.
