Restaurant in Champaign to close for several days after fire

VIDEO/PHOTOS: First responders were at Black Dog in Champaign, located at 320 N. Chestnut St., after a fire broke out Tuesday afternoon. Black Dog was open for business when the fire began, but no injuries have been reported, said Randy Smith, the Champaign Fire Departmentโ€™s Public Information Officer.

Smith said the roof caught fire just before 1 p.m. The cause was an accidental cooking fire, Smith added. When crews arrived on scene, they noticed moderate smoke and fire coming from the back of the building. They quickly used multiple hose lines and were able to quickly put the fire out before it extended into the restaurant. Protecting people โ€” both the customers and the employees โ€” was the departmentโ€™s number one priority. โ€œThey did pull the fire alarm and get everybody out of the building safely, which is the important part to get everybody out of the building safely. Once everybody was out, like I said, firefighters did go inside and help try and find what started it and actually how to get that fire out,โ€ Smith said.
